In a world full of anxiety and division, almost everyone is searching for peace. Yet so often, what we actually end up with is just a temporary distraction. We try to quiet our minds with entertainment, busyness, or escape, only to find that the underlying restlessness remains.
If you are tired of chasing fleeting calm, Ephesians 2 offers a radical and life-changing perspective: Jesus doesn't just offer peace — He Himself is our peace.
The Wall of Hostility
To understand the magnitude of what Paul writes in Ephesians 2, we have to step into the first-century world. Back then, deep-seated hostility and racial division existed between Jews and Gentiles. This separation wasn't just cultural; it was physical. In Herod's Temple, a literal dividing wall prohibited Gentiles from entering the inner courts, keeping them segregated and far away from the holy place.
Without Christ, Gentiles were considered foreigners to God's covenants, excluded from citizenship, and living without hope in the world.
One New Humanity
"But now in Christ Jesus, you who once were far away have been brought near by the blood of Christ." Ephesians 2:13
Through His sacrifice on the cross, Jesus didn't merely patch over human conflict — He completely destroyed the barrier and put hostility to death. He set aside the religious ordinances and regulations that distinguished groups and fueled division.
His ultimate goal was not to turn Gentiles into Jews, but to create in Himself one new humanity out of the two, thereby making true peace. In doing so, He fulfilled the ancient prophecy of Isaiah, proclaiming peace to those who were far away and peace to those who were near.
Direct Access and Belonging
Because of Christ's work of reconciliation, we are no longer divided or estranged. Through Him, both groups now have direct access to the Father by one Spirit.
You are no longer a foreigner, stranger, or outcast. In Christ:
- You are a fellow citizen in God's Kingdom.
- You are a member of God's royal household.
- You are being built together into a holy temple where God lives by His Spirit, resting on the foundation of the apostles and prophets with Christ Jesus Himself as the Chief Cornerstone.
